West Virginia Countryside

Hello and welcome!! For all those who love the mountain state or who are interested in visiting here are some of what West Virginia has to offer you. If its fishing, hunting, hiking or just the pleasure of being in the outdoors appreciating what nature has giving us hopefully this will get your blood pumping. Enjoy!

New River Gorge Bridge, the largest in North America.
Every October bridge day attracts B.A.S.E jumpers from across the world to this event. The New and Gauley Rivers are world famous for there whitewater and fishing and are a major attraction to the area. The radio telescope at Green Bank is one of a kind and is larger than the Statue of Liberty. It is located on the front side of the Allegahny Ridge in South of Spruce Knob.

In the northern pan-handle the Ohio River Valley is the heart of it all with several towns like Wellsburg, Weirton, Moundsville, Sistersville, and Wheeling all have a rich history of industry and that good old small town feeling that is common in the mountain state. Wheeling (my home town) has the world famous Cabelas Outfitter, and Oglebay Park known for its "Festival of Lights" or as the locals call it "The Festival of Taillights". With a close proximity to Pittsburgh, it definetly has more of the Rust Belt in her but without a doubt the backroads of the northern panhandle are a just as beutiful as anywhere else and is a great place to ride. Suggested routes like Route 88, National Rd., Rt. 60 and state route 219 (my favorite) takes you through the mountains from Elkins all the way to Lewisburg, WV and on into Virginia.

Wildlife in the state is amazing other than white tail deer, bear, mountain lion exc, the state is rich in it , and in state parks, national forests and beutiful trails. Going down 219 you can go to Seneca Rocks National Rec Area, its neighbor Spruce Knob (highest point in the state 4,898ft). Along these ridges are ski resorts like Canaan Valley in Tucker county and Snowshoe resort in Pochantis County, which is considered one of the best on the east coast. This region of the state is just jaw dropping in all seasons and attracts motorcylists, snowboarders, and family to enjoy this area.

In the eastern panhandle, only seventy miles from Washington D.C is a very attractive waterway called the Potomic River. Rich in history and beuty this area is a somewhat crossroads of our nation. Harpers Ferry is known best for John Browns raid which was basically the start of the conflict that would lead to the civil war. Its is also the lowest point of the state where the Potomic and Shannendoa Rivers meet. This is also a site for rail inthuesists where some fifty trains pass through here each day and is an all around amazing place to venture. The Applachian Trail passes through Harpers and and is the headquaters for the AT conservation group one of which is my father who hiked the trail in the seventies.

This is just a taste of the sample that we have to offer here in the Mountain state I hope this at least gives you a respect for the beuty of what im proud to call home.
